explanation
Explanation:
First of all... I love this song!!! :-)

It's very difficult to interpret lyrics because they are so personal and reflect the state of mind of the writer.

Here's an explanation of the basic meaning of the song:
The song Hook shares the same harmonic structure as Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D. The song's title refers to the word hook in music terminology (the catchy element or phrase of a song which makes it distinctive). The song's lyrics bluntly assert that whatever the singer sings about is effectively meaningless, since the song's hook—the evocative and universally–recognizable harmonic structure of the Canon in D—will keep listeners coming back, even if they are unaware of the reason.

Therefore, the "you" in the song is the listener. In my opinion, the singer is stating that it doesn't matter what the lyrics are about... it's the "hook" (catchy melody) that is important to the listener. This is what "moves" or deeply affects the listener... his firmness/self-control is "broken" and he finds himself listening to the song over and over again ("the hook brings you back"), even though he doesn't quite understand the reason why (because the lyrics of a song may be meaningless... and therefore the song appeals to him on a different level.. gut feeling, emotion...) The songwriter states that he has done his job (to move the listener) even though his lyrics may be meaningless... the "hook" breaks the listener's resolve and he is deeply touched.

It works on many levels... but I think that's the basic interpretation of the "lyrics". That's what is so clever about the song... the lyrics seem meaningless (because he is rambling) but if you read between the lines, they actually make sense. And in reality, they are the core meaning of the song and reflect the type of song he is singing about. Cool, eh? :-)

It doesn't matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel that I'll convey
Some inner truth of vast reflection
But I've said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it don't matter who you are
If I'm doing my job then it's your resolve that breaks

1-Because the hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely

There is something amiss, I am being insincere
In fact I don't mean any of this
Still my confession draws you near
To confuse the issue I refer
To familiar heroes from long ago
No matter how much Peter loved her
What made the Pan refuse to grow
(rpt 1...Was the)

Suck it in, suck it in, suck it in
If you're Rin Tin Tin or Anne Boleyn
Make a desperate move or else you'll win
And then begin to see
What you're doing to me this MTV is not for free
It's so PC it's killing me
So desperately I sing to thee of love
Sure but also rage and hate and pain and fear of self
And I can't keep these feelings on the shelf
I've tried well no in fact I lied
Could be financial suicide but I've got
Too much pride inside to hide or slide
I'll do as I'll decide and let it ride until I've died
And only then shall I abide this tide
Of catchy little tunes of hip three minute ditties
I wanna bust all your balloons
I wanna burn all of your cities
To the ground I've found
I will not mess around
Unless I play then hey
I will go on all day hear what I say
I have a prayer to pray
That's really all this was
And when I'm feeling stuck and need a buck
I don't rely on lunch because...
(rpt 1)

In the context of these lyrics, he is going to conquer your resolve, your determination and break you. He is going to attract you in and bang, you are conquered.
