errors of pitch

English translation: explanation

English language (monolingual) [PRO]
Music / comment about a music student work
English term or phrase: errors of pitch
Exploration and development of the musical elements are handled effectively and with well-focused control, thereby enhancing the quality of the piece. Notation is generally accurate (despite a few ***errors of pitch*** and layout, seemingly linked with the score-writing program) and mostly communicates the composer’s intention effectively.

Could you give me a description of a possible example?

Explanation:
Since the particular passage refers to music notation, an error of pitch would be when someone instead of C writes down B for example or D.

Explanation:
In order to determine whether differences exist between undergraduate music majors preparing for teaching careers in music and experienced secondary-level choral teachers in regard to their ability to detect pitch errors, a Pitch Error Detection (PED) test was developed, and a questionnaire designed to retrieve information about the subjects' musical education was devised. Statistical analysis of test results for 62 undergraduate music majors at the University of Wisconsin and 38 experienced secondary choral teachers in the state of Wisconsin indicated that there was no significant difference in the performance of the two groups, but that those teachers with 6 to 10 years of teaching experience did significantly better than the undergraduate music majors. It was also noted that subjects holding masters degrees (usually the same as those with 6 to 10 years of experience) performed better on the PED test than juniors, seniors, and bachelors degree holders, and that students who maintained an A average in 2 years of music theory did significantly better on the test than other students. These findings suggest that although teaching experience does not seem to contribute to improving competency in pitch error detection, graduate study and a good grasp of music theory may be related to this competency. wrong notes

Explanation:
I think that the comments are about a piece of composition by the student, who used a score-writing program to help with the notation.
The program presumably has "pitch corrector", just like the spell checker in MSWord. So, just as the spell checker sometimes mistakenly changes a word, the pitch corrector sometimes tends to suggest a different pitch or note than what was intended. This was what produced the wrong notes, or errors of pitch, in this case.

I hope this helps.

Pitch Errors: Listen to melodies that have 1 or more "wrong notes" - notes that the program plays at the wrong pitch. Your job is to find and correct the errors in pitch notation.

  • That way, there was no chance of the pitch corrector spitting out a wrong note.

musical tone

Explanation:
Pitch refers to musical tone (i.e., the key). In accoustic terms, pitch represents the perceived fundamental frequency of a sound. It is one of the three major auditory attributes of sounds along with loudness and timbre.

NB: This is only my suggested definition/explanation of "pitch." I am presuming that this is what you were asking about, and that the "errors in" portion was obvious and provided to give context.

errors of pitch

Explanation:
Pitch refers to the musical tone, as Richard has already stated. A musical work in F major, for example, is based in a scale beginning in F, which has a Bb. If you use a computer program when editing the music sheet, the program may convert the Bb in an A#, which sounds exactly the same, but in terms of pitch is wrong.
I guess this is the meaning of "errors of pitch"
