English term or phrase: It's these expressions I never give that keep me searching
"Heart Of Gold"

I want to live,
I want to give
I've been a miner
for a heart of gold.
It's these expressions
I never give
That keep me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.
Keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.

I've been to Hollywood
I've been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean
for a heart of gold
I've been in my mind,
it's such a fine line
That keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.
Keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.

Keep me searching
for a heart of gold
You keep me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm growing old.
I've been a miner
for a heart of gold.

Selected answer:expressions of my being / existence
Explanation:
First of all, don't always expect song lyrics to make total sense in 'normal' EN; for a start, a lot of them are written by people under the influence of various substances not noted as propitious to clarity of thought.

Also, words are often used just for the sound of them, without there necessarily being a structured sense, sometimes just a stream oif consciousness.

My understanding here would be that the 3 things listed above: 'to live', 'to give', and 'to find a heart of gold' are seen as 'expressions' of the writer's 'self' (their being or existence, if you like).

OK, of those, 'to live' is a pretty fundamental one.. but then you can 'live' on various different levels...

So I think s/he's saying "I'd like to have done all these things, but haven't" — sounds like they are a bit of a 'shut-down' person to me!

And I hate that arrogance that says: "If you're too stupid to understand the profundity of my words, too bad for you"

  -> Thanks, BF!

agree  Nesrin: Complete agreement with your assessment of many song lyrics... actually I've found the more "clever" they sometimes sound, the more hollow they actually are (one word: Coldplay)/.... Googling frantically for GM Hopkins...

-> Thanks, Nesrin! I was brought up on Gerard Manley Hopkins...

agree  William Murphy: I agree with your warning about taking lyrics too seriously in all cases. I think ole' Neil was just looking for a good word combination here. Nevertheless, good interpretation.

agree  Glenda Janssen: Okay, now I wonder why you brought GM Hopkins into this discussion. Is it because he does syntactically weird things? I love Hopkins by the way!

-> Thanks, Glenda! Oh yes, me too... I guess I was just trying to say that somùetimes the ùmeaning comes through, even though the structure / syntax is sometimes... surprising!
