English term or phrase: stand by me
I had never paid a lot of attention to the ending of the "Stand by Me" song and now I am confused about it's meaning at the end.

Lyrics can be found here:
http://www.paroles-musique.com/traduction-Seal-Stand_By_Me-l...

I had always thought the man was asking the woman to stand by his side (give him her support) all through the song, with the "stand by me" line.

But then at the very end, he says: Whenever you're in trouble, won't you stand by me?

So then he means that she should stand by him, because he will protect her -- only in this phrase? (reversal of roles?)

he is asking her if she will rely on him when she's in trouble
Explanation:
I read a very interesting article a while ago that explained that many of the "love" songs of this period were also intended to express mutual solidarity during the civil rights movement. If you listen to the song keeping that fact in mind, it makes more sense. It's a great song.

Hi Veratek: At the end of the song, he evidently offers his support, but throughoiut the body of the song, he seems to be asking for the other person's support.
