The matter can be understood as follows: You tie a rope to a branch of a tree and allow its one end hang in the air. To this free end, you go on adding weight/force, allowing the weight/force hang freely. A point will reach when either the branch of the tree will break or the rope will snap. In the first case, just before the branch breaks, the maximum load/force borne by the branch is the tensile strength of the branch; in the event of rope-snapping, the maximum load/force borne by the rope is its tensile strength.

disagree  Attila Piróth: No, this is an oversimplification. The difference between the yield point and the break point is crucial (not mentioned in your answer). I would certainly avoid picturing this with a braided rope, and the strain on the branch is not tensile type.

  -> Thanks for your comment! Yes, the branch of the tree I mentioned ought to be imagined as non-bending. Oversimplification was necessary to make the meaning clear. It is good to speak in simple. easily understandable terms, rather than speaking in new jargo
neutral  Ken Cox: With Attila. A better analogy would be losing your temper: tensile strength at yield is when you 'see red', and tensile strength at breaking is when you start throwing things.
