English term or phrase: Trailing
The major distinction between small and large bubbles is that surface tension dictates the shape of the former, while pressure dominates the shape of the latter. Consequently large bubbles are not spherical, but rather possess a smooth, spherical cap of radius r with an irregular trailing surface. The irregular trailing surface is associated with turbulence generated by a pair of symmetric vortices in the wake of the bubble. These vortices are shed as the bubble approaches the free surface. The stability of the trailing circulation is strongly dependent on the 2D geometry of the system.
