English term or phrase: proof
A woman is having a dress made at the tailor. She goes periodically to have herself fitted and to check on the progress of the dress. Finally, she says that the first "proof" is ready. By "proof," I think she means something like a preliminary version of the dress before the tailor does the final work necessary to complete the garment.

Is the "proof" the right word in English? If not, what word could be used instead?

Although I am not very familiar with sewing terms, I feel that proof sounds odd.

This is something someone said in Arabic, but the person used the English word "proof" (prove, actually) to convey the idea.

toile?
Explanation:
If it's a preliminary version of the dress made from a cheap material (ie to test the fit etc), it is known as a toile (in UK English at least).

The Toile
If you are happy with the quote, Natasha will take your body measurements and use them to make up a toile (or mock-up) of the dress. This will usually be in a cheaper fabric, similar to the weight and the look of your chosen fabric. The toile fittings are a very important part of the dressmaking process, not only to ensure the style and fit of the pattern is perfect, but also to make any design alterations, should you change your mind about how you want something to look.

Our Bespoke garments can be made within a budget based either on your own ideas and pictures or on a favourite sewing pattern. You will be fully involved in the whole garment creation process right from the initial consultation, design, choice and sourcing of the fabrics, through to the final fitting.
We work by taking a set of your measurements and producing a toile of your garment. This allows any fitting alterations and changes to be made before cutting into expensive fabrics.

If it's the actual garment (but at an early stage), then toile wouldn't be appropriate.

Thanks to everyone for some really informative and helpful responses. I am torn between toile and version and believe either one might work.

Fiitting

Explanation:
Fitting is the right word for this. When it comes to garment,, fitting means trials. Trials as in trying on the dress. This is done to ensure that the dress has been tailored as per her measurements or not? Or whether it needs more work like shortening, adjusting some parts of the dress, or any other alterations?

neutral  Tony M: Yes, except that we wouldn't usually use it as a noun like this, would we? I mean in the sense "The first fitting is ready", as in Asker's text?

agree  Shera Lyn Parpia: actually, not true. This is a perfectly legitimate and apt term - see the refs I have provided below.

agree  Piyush Ojha: The sentence needs to be rephrased as in "the dress is ready for first fitting", but 'fitting' is the word the asker is looking for.

sample

Explanation:
Sample can also be used. I have worked in retail garment industry with Mango, Zara, etc. and they use the word sample.

neutral  Tony M: But surely that only relates to a sample for the production of a new line, for example; I don't think it would really apply to the first try-out of a one-off garment for a private customer.

neutral  Yvonne Gallagher: with Tony, "sample" is the trial version for a new line

agree  Tony M: This is what I was thinking of too — but like you say, in the context of a private job, it might well indeed be the actual garment itself.

-> thanks Tony, yes - hard to tell. It's the idea of proof that made me think of a mock-up/toile

neutral  Yvonne Gallagher: yes, if this is a mock-up being made but from th context it is not clear. it seems to me it is the dress itself and her first fitting...
1 hr
-> yes, you're right - if it's the actual dress I think I'd just say she went for her first fitting - or the dress was ready for the first fitting. I'm not sure if there's an actual word for the first version of the finished garment, but I'm not an expert!

version

Explanation:
This is just an idea in case the Asker requires a word for the "provisional" dress without specifying whether it is a toile or the actual dress not yet sewn together.

"A woman is having a dress made at the tailor. She goes periodically for a fitting and to check on how the dress is progressing.
Finally, she says that the first version of the dress is ready."

We cannot expect the woman to know the correct word ("toile") so maybe she just says "version"!

neutral  Tony M: Your refs. do NOT support the use as a noun for the trial garment itself; they all refer to 'the activity of fitting'; would you really say "Your second fitting is hanging behind the door"?

neutral  Yvonne Gallagher: with Tony. I've never seen it used this way.
