English term or phrase: inside lane/ outside lane
In the UK we use "inside lane" to mean the lane closest to the exit/entrance of a motorway or dual carriageway. "outside lane" being the one used for overtaking. What are the equivalent terms in the US? Do they use the same terms with the same meaning?
Thanks

Careful with the glossary entry - according to your explanation, inside lane would correspond with right lane, not passing lane.

The entire 'highway' system is explained here.
I'm not familiar with US lane system...it doesn't seem quite as straightforwards as UK inside/outside, but maybe some of the information on here will help.

This is not an answer as such..just something that may help you (there is even a section with US/UK road terminology glossary)

same meaning in US English

Explanation:
In the US, we use "inside" and "outside" lanes just as you do, although we also call the outside lane the "passing lane" (not "overtaking"!).
Here are some examples from a US traffic site (Houston, Texas):

B. Katy Freeway: Eastbound, Silber to Post Oak, one outside lane closed 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; westbound, North Freeway to West Loop, alternate lane closed 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; westbound, San Jacinto to Crockett, two inside lanes closed 9 p.m.-5 a.m. Monday; westbound, Louisiana to Crockett, two inside lanes closed 9 p.m.-5 a.m. Monday.

C. Gulf Freeway: Southbound frontage road at FM 1959, one outside lane closed intermittently 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; southbound entry ramp from FM 1959 closed (detour to FM 2351).
