I agreed with the term Mr Sadeghieh has suggested as he said it is used in Iran but I don't know why we should not encourage proper terminology as opposed to non-technical ones. May be it is time for professional translators like Mr Sadeghieh and Razaghi who live in Iran to put forth to such terminology as they are real assets to the translation community in Iran.

Sorry, for the interruption (had to answer the phone). But I don't agree with gilding (with all due respect for Mr Razaghi) as the art of tazhib may sometimes even include beautiful images (see below) without the use of metal or gold.

agree  MKAZEMI: I agree, because we have to look for proper English terms being used in English speaking countries not in Iran.

-> Dear Mr Mkazemi, Thank you. I agree with you completely!Kind regards, Maryam Taghavi

agree  Edward Plaisance Jr: "Gilding" refers strictly to applying gold leaf, which I believe the Arabic root of tazhib refers to, but "illumination" is the much better, more encompassing word here for book decoration in both the East and the West. Agree with Maryam's comments above.
