Please, what does سَنْگَر (sangar) mean?

My dictionary gives two contradictory meanings: trench, bulwark. But a trench is a hole in the ground and a bulwark is a wall built for defence.

It certainly doesn't seem to be a trench as far as I can see.

Can you perhaps find a web picture, please?

In Persian سنگر mainly refers to sandbag fortification, where soldiers can take refuge, to make sure you can search the expression and have a look at the pictures. Iran during it's eight years war with Iraq used these sandbag fortifications for protection.
stronghold in its sense as دژ or قلعه is not used for سنگر.

Aryanpour also gives all of these: fortification, bulwark, redoubt, dugout, trench, entrenchment, a fortified place

If you Google Images سنگر you will see quite a selection of options.

If you know the geographic location of the "sangar" you should be able to pick one. For example, WW I in France would be "trench" or "foxhole".

On the beaches of Normandy, it would probably be "fortification" or "redoubt" (on the German side, that is).
