1. I did not mean that assimilation and domination have equal connotations. The point of similarity is that some people find assimilation and domination positive terms, while some other do not. I hope I am clear enough on this.
2. It does not only mean "the process whereby an immigrant population...". It may "refer to either immigrant diasporas or native residents that come to be culturally dominated by another society." (1)
3. I do not believe it is a positive term. Here are extracts from postcolonial literatures:
"Conversely, translational accommodation is anchored
in a fear of total assimilation, a desire to resist being translated
into the target language" (2)
"Sour Sweet is about Chinese immigrants in Britain who cope with problems of assimilation". "Assimilation is a concept which foresees the complete loss of the original cultural identity" (3)
"This reaction [violence] is often generated by an axiomatic fear of assimilation" (4)
