Finnish term or phrase: merkitä vakuutus/vakuutukset
From the annual report of a bank that offers insurance services, etc.:

"
Alla on lueteltu varautumiskeinot, joilla vakavaraisuutta voidaan tarvittaessa vahvistaa.
[...]
Riskialteimpien vakuutusten merkitsemisen lopettaminen
"

I don't understand what "merkitä" means in this context.

Is "marking" an action that one can do on insurance policies?

Merkitä meanings include: mark (on a box); stamp (for identification); enrol (as a member); enter (note using letters and numbers); sign (add signature); subscribe (shares or capital); entail (consequences); signify (go to show); mean (convey).

The original meaning of merkitä derives from 'to mark'. Underwriting means putting insurer's trust in an enterprise. Hope you will find this helpful and not confusing!

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks! Do you happen to know why "merkitä" is used for this meaning? In what sense does the underwriting of insurance policies involve "marking"? (Or, does this expression draw on a different sense of "merkitä"?)

Asker: My question was how we get to the meaning "underwrite" from the other meanings of "merkitä" (since I would imagine that "underwrite" is not its earliest/simplest meaning). Perhaps it's impossible to resolve that question -- I was just curious if there is any obvious answer to it.
