This is not a transitive thing being done (like artificially transferring genetic material), but rather an intransitive absorption. While I like absorption, I think passage works nicely.

Online-sanakirjoista on pula, itse en ole löytänyt yhtään hyvää. Jos jollakulla on vinkkejä, otetaan vastaan.

IMHO passage on enemmän kauttakulkua, transfer viittaa enemmän siirtymiseen. Sanotaanhan esimerkiksi DNA transfer into cells ja transfer of genetic material into cells.

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is one of the main enzymes responsible for the metabolism of levodopa, dopamine, other catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline), and their metabolites. COMT catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) to the hydroxyl group of catecholamines. COMT is widely distributed throughout the body including central nervous system neurons and glia, but not nigrostriatal dopamine neurons.

disagree  Owen Witesman: I think the difference is that DNA transfer is a larger process with multiple active steps--this is just talking about something crossing a cell boundary,which is why I also like absorption. Would we talk about "transfer" of water into hydrophilic tissue?
