Le hors-média, c'est tout simplement l'art de "communiquer" avec le consommateur en dehors des espaces médias alloués classiquement et clairement à la publicité, (radio, TV, presse, affichage etc.), et sans que celui-ci ne s'aperçoive vraiment de la nature commerciale du contact.

Signalons un autre terme utilisé récemment pour décrire ces techniques de publicité invisible : le "undercover marketing" (apparu aux États-Unis dans le courant des années 90). Nous préférons cependant conserver la dénomination "hors-média", car elle est moins axée sur les techniques récentes, en particulier "Internet" (marketing viral…). Certaines méthodes "furtives" sont en fait bien plus anciennes qu'il n'y parait. Ce terme englobe aussi des techniques supplémentaires que nous jugeons importantes (consumers magazines, lobbying, etc.).
