advertising tarpaulin Explanation: A tarpaulin--tarp for short--is a handy, water-resistant or waterproof cover for large areas or items. Usually rectangular in shape, a tarp can also be shaped to fit multiple shapes. Grommets set into the corners and sides make it easy to lash around and cover many things. The word comes from the nautical world, combining "tar," the water-resistant coating, with "palling," or cover. Because it is flexible and large, a tarp has many uses. In addition to protecting things and areas from the weather, a tarp can protect a floor from paint splatters, a tent from dirt and dampness, or an open truckload of items from wind damage. Printed advertising tarps may be pulled behind airplanes or stretched over carnival areas. Farmers cover hay or barnyard waste with them. A tarp makes a dandy, easy-to-erect wind or weather shelter when teamed with rope and a tree or some poles.
