French term or phrase: Affichage longue conservation
"Réseau Longue Conservation"

Hi all,

The above term is part of a presentation on an advertising campaign, which includes billboards/posters etc. in metro stations and a "réseau long conservation" - or a network of posters/billboards that are up for a long period of time (at least that's how I understand it):

Does this have a name in English?
Thanks,
David

English translation:long-term outdoor
Explanation:
Outdoor means anything that's not in the customer's home, so it would also include metro stations as in your example. You could also say "poster", though in my experience outdoor is more common.

Obviously I've left out "advertising", as it's obvious from the context.

neutral  writeaway: Just with 'long term advertising' but without the 'outdoor'. Not in the French and if it's used in the metro, it's hardly outdoor /no it would not be wrong to omit it. It may be implied but it's not in the French for a reason

-> If you read my explanation and reference, you'll see that it would be wrong to omit 'outdoor'. But once again, thanks!

agree  Daryo: outdoor of customer's home can obviously be indoor of some venue or even underground - nothing against the logic in it, when you are aware of the reference point!

billboards

Explanation:
This is the term validated by one of my major corporate customers in this field; as you say, it is the kind of (usually large) poster displays that will not be changed very often, as distinct from the smaller ones for individual promotions etc. which may be changed very frequently, and often by the store's own staff.

neutral  philgoddard: You can't ignore "longue conservation".

-> Well, according to my client, you CAN, as (for them) billboards are only used specifically for longer-term advertising (they have to be glued up!)

neutral  Kari Foster: I came across this glossary which indicates "permanent billboard". I see what you mean about glue, but electronic billboards also exist... http://outdooradvertisingusa.com/pdf/glossary_of_terms.pdf

-> Yes, of course — but they still have to be programmed by a specialist contractor, not stuck up with Sellotape by the cleaner ;-) As I said, this is the preferred term validated by one of my customers, a major retail chain.

neutral  Daryo: I think that it's the form they (this client of yours) use for their "long-term advertising" but the concept is wider - includes also f.ex. ads painted all over black cabs (well, what's supposed to be a "black" cab)...

Long term holding

Explanation:
Reading from Sign Kick. This is a professional company and paragraph 8 explains that companies buy what is known as a long term holding.

Example sentence(s):
  • As a sidenote, sometimes no amount of forward planning will help. A handful of large companies invest in what is known as a long term holding

disagree  Daryo: it's a related / derived term, but it's not the term to translate CL5 about that // this term is about the logistical support to ONE form of "Affichage longue conservation", not the advertising itself!
