French term or phrase: détour
I'm not sure if this is a legitimate prozcom question, or just a stylistic one.
This is an academic essay about the state of social & cultural anthropology today. Among other things, it speaks favourably of the need for "détour". Is there a recognized equivalent social anthropological term in English? Or does "détour" literally mean 'detour' / 'perspective' / 'distraction' ?
Some instances of "détour":

agree  philgoddard: It sounds like the writer is overly fond of this word, and it shouldn't be translated the same way each time. "Paradigm shift" is another possibility, albeit a cliché.
