French term or phrase: dégraisser, dégraissant
In archaeological contexts, what does the term degraissant refer to? I know the standard translation, but in this field it has a special meaning, I believe.

The subject is pottery digs and finds in Senegal. The audience, archaeologists and other scientists. This will appear in a scholarly volume.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Notes to answerer
Asker: This meaning suits the context well. The author is discussing pottery making, so "tempering" [the clay] fits. Thank you so much.

I just had another look at question.

Is the "degreaser" used by the potters or the archaeologists? It doesn't really matter as same word is used for both although the meaning is not identical. For a potter, a "degreaser" could be an inclusion or addition...See here

degreaser

Explanation:
Used in academic and commercial contexts.

Example sentence(s):
  • The analysis suggests that this pottery was produced locally, perhaps using clay and degreasers from the surrounding area
  • TASCO/Rittel's WOOL DEGREASER cuts lanolin like a knife! It's a detergent with a degreasing action that washes away the lanolin in sheep, llama and other wooly skins.

Reference information:
