The term "sites d'interface" appears in an archaeology article on a protohistoric site in the south of France. I have not come across this term before and can't identify an accurate meaning.

The sentence and paragraph it appears in is the following:

"L’apparition de sites d’interface est synonyme d’une spécialisation, liée à l’ouverture pleine et entière au négoce méditerranéen. Les formes et fonctions de tels habitats, novateurs dans les schémas indigènes de l ‘âge du Fer, peuvent ici être précisés, avec en arrière-plan la question du sens qu’il faut donner à la notion grecque d’« emporion »."

it has been translated as interfacing sites but this is, I'm fairly sure not the right translation and is associated with computing. Any ideas?

Could it be something like the appearance of compound sites? or connecting sites?

agree  Christopher Crockett: My first [evidence-free] thought was that it was a question of an archeological site which was on the interface between cultural epochs... Your answer here is the correct one: it's the interface between different cultures (or groups), not epochs.

  -> I think that's partly correct, because you can have two cultures interfacing and then one becomes dominant.
