Levallois tool (or tool making) supports Explanation: Based on this abstract, I think supports are supplies (perhaps tool-making tools, or materials) used to make tools. https://www.jstor.org/stable/27924284?seq=1#page_scan_tab_co... Starting here at p. 728 there is an entire subchapter quantifying discoveries of "supports" of various tools including Lavallois. http://www.persee.fr/doc/bspf_0249-7638_2002_num_99_4_12752#... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2017-06-27 08:44:56 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- correction *Levallois* |

Levallois type Explanation: This is a tricky one as the French have (to me) a weird way of describing how lithic tools are produced. It's also not written very clearly so it's hard to tell what they're trying to describe. But I'm getting that they've got a mixture of two lithic production methods, one of which is Levallois, one of which is unipolar, but that the upper assemblage actually contains no Levallois type tools. And yet, this is still more confusing because unipolar Levallois type tools were also made! Anyway, in terms of the original question, you're quite right. You just ignore the "support" bit, which literally does mean the material used. |
