French term or phrase: observer le soleil
In a document about tourist attractions in the Pyrenees. What sort of glasses would this be, to enable you to observe the sun, please? Any help gratefully received!

observer le soleil (here)
Solar observing glasses

Explanation:
Those would be solar observing glasses, which block 99% of UV rays.

I don't think the French (Et des lunettes permettent ***d’observer le soleil*** ) necessarily uses the French equivalent(s) of this term, which seem to be "Lunettes de protection spéciales eclipses" (see http://www.sciencesetavenir.fr/espace/20150316.OBS4710/ou-ac... or "Lunettes d'observation pour éclipse solaire".

I withdraw this answer - there is a better answer on the discussion boards.

Example sentence(s):
  • "If you’re observing the Sun without any optical aid, all you really need are low-cost solar observing glasses."

solar eclipse glasses

Explanation:
I think in the UK the most common term would be '(solar) eclipse glasses' and not 'solar observing glasses'.

However, given that tourists may well be visiting when there isn't an eclipse, I would probably go for something along the lines of "Since le Pic du Midi also houses an observatory, eclipse glasses are also available to allow visitors to view the sun safely.
