I'm translating several birth certificates from Djibouti. On each one there's a part that says "Rég." (followed by a number) in a text box on the left-hand side, alongside "Série", "Année", and "Numéro", as you can see here: https://www.djiboutiembassy.com.tr/p/application-for-birth-c...

It would make sense for it to mean "Registre" BUT there's an accent on the "e". I don't think it's "région" as the certificates appear to be from the same place and the numbers are different.

Or could it be that they've added the accent because you can't really pronounce "reg" on its own (because of the schwa sound) if you read it out loud? If that's even a thing?

@ Alison MacG - thanks so much for the reference, what a great find! I think that pretty much confirms it means "registre".
@ ph-b & Caroline. I hadn't thought of that, but will definitely bear it in mind for future projects. Unfortunately, the deadline was a bit tight on this one and I'd already delivered by the time you posted.

I agree with ph-b: ring the consulate and ask them. We often forget that a well-chosen phone call can save hours of researching online.

Consulate?

I've said it before, so will just repeat it again: there are times when it's just so much simpler to get in touch with the relevant authorities, in your case the Djiboutian (do you say this in English?) consulate nearest to where you live. I have always found that the civil servants were very kind and keen to help. I suspect that if you're in Mexico, the nearest embassy/consulate is the one in Washington, DC, the details of which are here :https://diplomatie.gouv.dj/Pages/consulats_ambassades_etrang... Thanks - yes, perhaps. It does seem odd, though, that it's printed that way by on all birth certificates - in other words, the "Rég" wasn't written by the registrar but printed by the government. You'd think they'd check...

I just think it's due to lack of knowledge of the fine points of French that they put an accent on the "e". It's probably the writer's 2nd or even 3rd language.
