re-synching Explanation: Ah, Writeaway's reference for meaning 4 added at 12:19 seems to me exactly what is needed here — the action of putting pictures and sound (back) in sync. My low confidence level is only because I don't recall if there is a specific term for use in this context, nor do I know if there is a specific term used in the industry in the US. Note that in dubbing terms, synching (= synchronization) has 2 primary senses: 1) Ensuring that things like voices etc. are 'in sync' with the visible lip movements — we've all seen problems with poorly-dubbed foreign language films — or in the case of director John Boorman, even in EN ones! Of course, when dialogue replacement is used (as for very many modern films), the problem arises even in VO films — many lay people associate 'dubbing' solely with dubbing into a foreign language version, but of course it refers to 'doubling' the dialogue etc. in ANY version. 2) Synching has a less obvious, more specialist meaning (though of course from the exact-same principle) as 'the act of adding sound FEX (etc.) in sync with the picture' — i.e. not simply correcting some error that has arisen, but actually creating synchronization out of nothing! I suspect it is probably this latter sense that is intended here — which ultimately relates back to my discussion suggestion, of the necessity of replacing (by synching) bits of sound that may be missing after voice track removal. Cf. the David Lean's Director's Cut of "Lawrence of Arabia", where certain scenes had to be re-created, and the original sound had been lost, but an actor had to be employed to imitate Jack Hawkins's voice! |
