French to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Computers: Hardware / Sony PS3
French term or phrase: manette
The background is a dispute between two companies that market accessories for video & PC games consoles particularly for SonyPS3.

"Il s'agit de sur-gâchettes en matières plastiques (en anglais usuel "triggers") destinées à être fixées sur les gâchettes R2 et L2 de la manette Sony PS3 afin d'améliorer la sensibilité de ces dernières et d'éviter aux doits du joueur de glisser"

In this context, is the "manette" called a "lever" or a "controller"?

disagree  Tony M: I think a 'manette' is much more specific than just a switch

disagree  Neil Coffey: L2 and R2 are the names of buttons on the control pad, so it's fairly clear it's not a "switch"...

I believe manette here refers to the gamepad/joypad/control pad of the PS3...

neutral  Neil Coffey: Nothing essentially wrong with "gamepad", but "control pad" or "controller" are more common specifically for PS2/PS3.

neutral  Chris Hall: Joystick is now an outdated term. Gaming devices have progressed and moved forward. "Joysticks" have been upgraded to "gamepads" / "joypads" / "control pads". See BeCrystalClear's answer and link.
3 mins

neutral  Tony M: Although 'manette' may be translated as 'joystick' when it refers to that specific element, I don't believe the term is used to refer to the thing as a whole.
6 hrs

disagree  Neil Coffey: Agree with Chris -- it's rare for the controller of a video console to be called a "joystick".
