conventional/proprietary screed Explanation: Generally speaking, a chape is a screed, i.e. a layer of mortar applied to the top of a concrete floor slab to provide a smooth, strong, dense finish suitable for laying of flooring (tiles, lino, carpet, etc.) Basically it's a low-tech thing. However, there are many proprietary products on the market, using resins as well as concrete, to provide special "final" finishes, or using new concrete techniques to be self-levelling, etc. I'm not 100% sure, but it would seem logical for "chapes industrielles" to refer to these industrially produced proprietary products (any builder can make the concrete for a conventional screed). The Scott/Penguin Building Dict. says (under "screed"): "Suppliers can provide ***ready-mixed screeds*** suitable for placing by barrow or by screed pump" and "***Synthetic screed*** = ***levelling compound***", which gives you further possibilities. |
