Explanation:
Slings are used for lifting. Strops are, or can be, practically identical (length of rope, cable, webbing, etc. with a loop at each end) but are used as a form of restraint, especially in nautical contexts. The strop used for sharpening razors is rather different!

When I worked in a warehouse, though, the terms "strop" and "sling" were used interchangeably for the nylon webbing contraptions passed under crates and attached to the crane hook.
