Construction / Civil Engineering / restoration
French term or phrase: reprise (des armatures)
This is from a document that lists restoration work to be done on and around a stone doorway at a French heritage site.

Here is an excerpt:

■ Démontage de la balustrade et de la corniche ;
■ Restauration de la plate-bande en pierre de l’entablement, avec **reprise et complément
des armatures internes** ;
■ Remplacement des pierres dégradées sur les différentes parties de l’ouvrage;
■ Traitements de consolidation des pierres dégradées et conservées, avec ragréages ;
■ Confortation des maçonneries internes par injection de coulis ;
■ Mise en œuvre d’un jointoiement complet ;
■ Exécution de patines d’intégration des pierres neuves

I'm not really sure how to translate reprise here. If I've understood correctly, the internal reinforcement (or should I say armature?) is being 'repaired' and "strengthened" (is that the sense of "complément d'armatures" here, something being added to strengthen it?). But I'm not really sure if that's what this is really saying, nor am I sure what to say in English since I'm no expert in this field.

Would appreciate any assistance on the part in between asterisks!

Thank you!

UK English is fine.

"Step 2:

• Clean steel reinforcement with mechanical wire-brushing or by sand blasting.

• In case the reinforcing bars are corroded and have lost more than 25% of their diameter, they have to be cut and removed.

Step 3:

• In such event, removed steel bars should be replaced with new steel bars of the same diameter either by respecting the overlap length or by welding 100 mm length to the existing steel"

You don't say how old the structure is, but this may either be original iron or steel reinforcement or reinforcement added in previous restoration work.

"Using radiocarbon dating on metal found in Gothic cathedrals, an interdisciplinary team has shown, for the first time through absolute dating, that iron was used to reinforce stone from the construction phase.

"... In Beauvais, a number of the metallic tie-rods supporting the flying buttresses bear graffiti from the eighteenth century, potentially indicating that the metal may have been a later addition. However certain pieces proved to date back to the beginning of the construction process (around 1225-1240 AD), suggesting that in order to succeed in erecting the world’s highest Gothic choir (46.3 meters), iron was combined with stone from the initial design phase"
