@Asker
That book seems to have been written by Jean-Paul Kurtz (a former engineer with SNCF, I believe). His Dictionary of Civil Engineering - English-French also gives some examples of the use of "merlon" in English https://goo.gl/z6blF8 . However, though his dictionary can be useful, his English is not really good enough, as you will see if you scan some of the entries. It's a shame that he didn't work in collaboration with an engineer who was a native-speaker of English.

I'd accept an endorsement from Bourth more readily than one from J-PK.

Asker: Merlon does exist. Found it in a book about Medieval houses. Have a good day, Chris.

Asker: Yes, I know it is old and not entirely convincing but our old friend Bourth was quite happy with merlon, pity he no onger contributes.
