initial dimensioning Explanation: Make a first estimation of the size of the main facilities of the airport. This is a prerequisiste for the foreplanning - you cannot plan anything until you have estimated the size of the facilities. For example, one critical parameter is the number of aircraft that are going to use the airport - simply the number of parking places for the aircraft defines the size of the aircraft apron and the size of the taxiways. Similarly, the number of passengers (and therefore the number of fingers on a certain terminal) force the terminal to have a certain size (because of the space you need to park two aircraft side by side). The type of aircraft is also important - it's not the same to park, say, an ATR, or an A-380! The number of necessary runways (calculated on the basis of arriving/departing aircraft) and their length (depending on the type of aircraft) also determine critical dimensions for an airport... Until these items have not been at least initially established, it is a waste of time to make any other plans... |

preestimate the dimensions Explanation: "learns to run preestimate and monthly estimate reports" -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2004-02-28 00:29:09 (GMT) -------------------------------------------------- a \"preestimate\" comes at the early stages of planning hr.dop.wa.gov/lib/hrdr/specs/60000/66080.htm |

survey Explanation: The honourable profession of quantity surveyor comes to mind. Certainly they are needed in any major civil engineering project. Maybe in this case this is about initial surveys - especially if we are still wondering how much traffic will use the airport. |
