French to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Construction / Civil Engineering / metal superstructures
French term or phrase: épreuve d'étude
In a works contract for the supply of metallic superstructures in a shipyard: Fournitures nécessitant épreuves d'études ou planches d'essais. Can anyone help with the correct translation here, please? Test studies? Technical studies? I haven't been able to find this exact combination and am afraid that there's a commonly-used one in the industry that's passing me by! Thanks in advance.

test/trial (study)

Explanation:
I'd prefer to have more context but think that this must refer to trials/tests of some sort to determine the appropriateness/capacities/specifications of the metal being used in the superstructure. (This superstructure is probably to be used in block construction so needs to be tested before being welded into position?)

As Mary has said in Dbox. there are a range of tests that could be carried out but in the absence of further context I assume it is about testing the suitability of the metal being used so perhaps stress testing might be appropriate?

And especially when it is this OR planche d'essai which can be translated as "suitability trials" See here:

Epreuve d'études ou planches d'essais : la juxtaposition de ces deux locutions me laisse penser qu'il s'agit plutôt d'étudier les caractéristiques de ces fournitures, par ex. leur résistance ? Test samples ?
