The most helpful suggestions I received came from another forum, which pointed me to sites/catalogues using 'armoire hinge' and 'fiche hinge', both specifically described as characteristic of (old) French cabinets/furniture, so this is what I sent on to the customer for validation.

These are the pictures you get if you search for "continuous barrel hinge": https://www.google.com/search?q="continuous barrel hinge"&tb... . They look like modern versions of the hinges shown in your references.

As noted in my reply to Tony M's suggestion below, further research (and help from another forum) suggests that these 'fiches à lacet' are very specific to France (Europe?) and may be referred to as 'armoire hinges' or 'fiche hinges', although I'm not sure I've pinned down exactly the right term yet. Thanks Marco but I don't think that fits. I can't see how to edit my original post to add this information: the specificity of this type of hinge is that it runs the full length of the door. It is a decorative type of hinge used on French (European) cabinets/armoires.

Le Grand Dictionnaire translates it as "pintle hinge" (see http://www.granddictionnaire.com/ficheOqlf.aspx?Id_Fiche=208... ). However, when I search for "pintle hinge", I get pictures that don't look at all like those in your reference.
