French to English translations [Non-PRO]
Social Sciences - Education / Pedagogy / Academic study
French term or phrase: un état de l’art
The full sentence is: "nous avons réalisé une enquête à partir d’un état de l’art des études portant sur ce sujet..."

I know 'un état de l'art' is "une étude ciblée, approfondie et critique des travaux existants réalisés sur un thème particulier" but does anyone know what we call this is US English?

Thank you.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Can one not say 'a state of the art' in the same way as 'a literature review'?

disagree  writeaway: how do you explain the "un"???
7 mins

disagree  Eliza Hall: @Asker: No, you can't. "State of the art" means something else in English ("the latest and most sophisticated or advanced stage of a technology, art, or science" https://www.dictionary.com/browse/state-of-the-art).
52 mins

agree  philgoddard: I think this would be OK if combined with a word such as review or survey.
1 hr

disagree  Yvonne Gallagher: 100%? It's not a noun and not used in this context
2 hrs

agree  Charles Davis: Phil is absolutely right. "State-of-the-art review" would be an ideal translation here. And as I've noted above, your answer is correct even without "review".

neutral  Daryo: yes, but here it's useless on its own - you have to look at the whole of "un état de l’art des études portant sur ..."

[à partir] d’un état de l’art des études portant sur ce sujet
[based on / starting from] the state of the art of studies on this subject

Explanation:
IOW

we took as starting point the best studies amongst those done on this subject (i.e. those which are "state of the art" when it comes to conducting studies - those applying the best methodology currently available)

Same as you can have the "state of the art" [the best currently available] of any kind of technology, you can have the "state of the art" of how to conduct studies i.e. studies done using the "latest/best methods"

disagree  Yvonne Gallagher: Absolutely not natural English, and "latest/best methods" is not the meaning either

-> Interesting method of yours: getting first the sentence structure of the ST right is some kind of timewasting luxury? Simply throw away bits you don't like, conflate two elements in one and in the process twist the meaning .... doesn't matter?

neutral  philgoddard: You demurred when Nicolas posted this, and now you've proposed it yourself!
7 hrs
-> My point is to point out how "state of the art" fits in this sentence // the combination with the other elements has also to be the right one.

disagree  GILOU: vous ne pouvez pas faire plus long encore ?

agree  writeaway: yes imo un état is a document of some sort. But asker already decided on state of the art. tant pis /un état de l’art des études . and it's UN état d'art and not l'état d'art. The art of careful reading is a translator's best friend

-> thanks. Asker rather hasty in decision!//oh well. We know how some people just see what they want...

  -> Thank you!

disagree  philgoddard: I feel this is a translation of "étude ciblée, approfondie et critique", not the term the asker has requested. "State of the art" doesn't just mean "advanced", it means "the current knowledge".
1 hr
->  "A state of the art" is wrong HERE. SEE Asker's question: 'un état de l'art' is "une étude ciblée...sur un thème particulier...what [do] we call this is US English?"! /What's linguistic reason for disagree? I never claimed it only means advanced

agree  Jennifer White: Yes, asker has not actually decided on "state of the art" - it's just a check, and after 72 hours the answer with the most agrees will prevail! Watch this space..........
4 hrs
  -> Many thanks:-)

neutral  Charles Davis: Phil is absolutely right here. This is too general; it misses the essential point of an "état de l'art", which is that it establishes "where we are": the current state of research on a field. I also find "study of the studies" a bit awkward.
4 hrs
-> I disagree//Obviously I'm not suggesting "study of the studies".

disagree  Daryo: 1) "un état de l’art" = "state of the art" - simples 2) "studies ..." IS ANOTHER ELEMENT of what is the term to translate as a whole: "un état de l’art des études portant sur ..." if you don't start by getting that right - you're bound to crash ..
9 hrs
-> STOP SHOUTING (especially when it's rubbish)
