French term or phrase: phase
This document outlines functional and safety tests to be carried out on the handpiece of a medical device.

A number of these tests are electrical checks, including the "test haute tension phase-terre", which I have translated as "line-to-ground high-voltage test" (in accordance with IEC's preference for "line" as opposed to "phase" in English*).

In a later mention of this test, is it safe to use "line" to translate the French "phase" when used alone, as in the segment below?
"Faire le test HAUTE TENSION entre le contact de la fiche (phase) et l’applicateur de la pièce à main"

Explanation:
The three energised conductors that connect a three-phase load to its three-phase supply are called ‘lines‘. The voltage between any two line conductors are termed ‘line voltages‘ and the current that passes along each line conductor is termed a ‘line current‘.

neutral  Tony M: Not here! As Asker says, the IEC prefers 'line' in EN, and the use of 'phase' is only really justified in a multi-phase system; in a normal single pahse system, we talk about Line / Neutral / Earth

agree  Tony M: Yes, use 'line' here, as this is clearly not going to be a 3-phase system!
