French term or phrase: s'épuiser contre
Hello,

I have a few pages about acrobats and jugglers, the artists below perform a "Main à main" (hand-to-hand) number, I'm not sure of "s'épuiser contre" in the sentence

...a moment at nightfall when a person prey to his daily torment (maybe daily stress?) ends against such a familiar adversary…I have understood that the daily torment is nothing compared to insomnia (adversaire si familier)

I'd really appreciate any help here, I think might be missing something!

Thank you!

agree  MoiraB: I don't think asker needs to think far beyond the dictionary suggestions of to exhaust oneself/to wear oneself out/to tire oneself out - or perhaps wages an exhausting battle/gruelling struggle?
