They can't be pigeonholed. Explanation: This is just an additional possibility to the two already mentioned (which work, if you ask me). My suggestion plays with the idea of a particular template of how one is supposed to be or behave (a defined role). For example, some actors say that their greatest fear is being pigeonholed into a certain type of role and not being allowed to explore other types of characters. An actor who is polyvalent escapes being pigeonholed into just one type of character or role. Similarly, a person that is difficult to pigeonhole is someone who cannot be pinned down to a specific expected role or a way of being or acting which society expects of him/her. |

break the mould Explanation: it's basically the same as "sortir du moule" not your run-of-the-mill person but highly individual.
