You object to "ombudsman" because it's now only a part of the institution's tasks, and then you suggest another term: "Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Officer/Commissioner" that also only represents a part of the tasks. Why is one term representing a part of the tasks unsuitable while another is?

I wasn't aware that I was "insisting". I have written a suggestion, that's all. The sharp observer will note that I started out by giving my own suggestion only a "3", and that means that I'm aware that there may be better suggestions.

First of all, the FR term "Défenseur des droits de lutte contre les discriminations" is a mix of the official title "Défenseur des droits" and a smaller part of the institutions's function: "lutte contre les discriminations". There is no institution in France with that full name, and that's an error not to carry over in the translation.

"Médiateur de la Rép." no longer exists as an independent institution, but the Déf. d droits continues the same ombudsman functions, so it's hardly relevant that the official title has been changed. It is undisputable that a major part of the current institution's tasks are ombudsman-type tasks, regardless of what you call them.

I don't suggest retaining the former term. "Ombudsman" was never the official FR term, only a description of the type of tasks, and that hasn't changed.

Insisting on translating the F term "Défenseur des droits de lutte contre les discriminations" by an E term (Ombudsman) when that term was for a F concept or an office (Médiateur de la République) that no longer exists and that has been deliberately replaced by that new F term and concept is beyond me. And arguing that the new concept contains and encompass the former hence the former term should be retained is also defying my sense of logic. An apple is a fruit and the notion of fruit includes that of an apple, would it follow that the word "fruit" should be translated in English as "apple" ?

I would like to point out that I'm not promoting any 'case' but simply trying to find the best term. This is not a competition but a linguistic debate.

There was no wish to "do away" with le Médiateur de la République. What essentially happened was that the institution was renamed while it absorbed three other institutions, la HALDE being one of them. This has not done away with the ombudsman tasks, which go ahead as before.

But it is correct that 'ombudsman' only describes the former 'Médiateur' tasks, which is why my suggestion points out that discrimination tasks are also under this institution's scope.

Your 3 references clearly state that ombudsman (le Médiateur de la République) was superseded by "Défenseur des droits" who is in charge of addressing equal opportunity issues (lutte contre les discriminations) whilst the other was not. Your references undermine your case : Le défenseur des droits was instituted precisely to do away with le Médiateur de la République (Ombudsman). And that's why your translation is wrong.

As the company is in France and this relates to an employment tribunal matter, then France is the country of reference for the term posted. (Mark, I'm not sure if I'm not misreading you, but the French Défenseur will only have authority where French law prevails).

The company is based in France but conducts business internationally. There is no indication as to the country or countries covered by this "Défenseur"
