English translation: Entrepreneurial Market Garden

French term or phrase: périmètre maraîcher
Also called "jardins maraichers."

It refers to a plots of land that grows products for market. The size could easily be considered as a garden in the West (primary target audience) but the land is operated as what would qualify as a small farm plot in many parts of the world. In some ways, I believe they can be reminiscent of urban community gardens where people plant some stuff to eat, but on a slightly larger scale. It also differs in that the goal is to use the plot of land for products to sell at the market to earn cash, whereas urban hippies who may be involved in community gardens are trying to get out of the system.

These are located in Senegal and are part of a development project. The property rights surrounding these plots are not clear to me, and may be varied, but I suspect they use land provided by the community.

I am unsatisfied with what I think might be a second-best alternative translation as "market garden" because I believe it's more like a small farm than a garden, but it is important that it communicate in the name that the products are destined for the market (think local markets in development countries, not ideologies and market systems).

Here are two examples of these plots to earn additional income: "Les populations peuvent ainsi l’utiliser pour vaincre les maladies mais aussi pour améliorer la sécurité alimentaire avec les jardins maraichers" and "Avec les périmètres maraichers les ménages ont des lopins pour améliorer leurs revenus"

Any suggestions are welcome.

Small-holding (or smallholder farming) is good for the situation described particularly in more 'specialized' circles, but in the context, and with the target audience in mind, I proposed to the client that this translation may best suit what they are looking to communicate about their activities. Market garden is probably fine too, but adding the "entrepreneurial" in front affects how the activities are viewed.

agree  Sian Cooper: I'm not sure I'd bother with the 'entrepreneurial' - a 'market garden' is a well-recognised term

neutral  Evans (X): In the UK at least, an allotment is strictly controlled for non-commercial use. Growing food for sale is prohibited by most local authorities. The scale too makes this a misleading word to use for the type of small-scale farming described.

smallholding

Explanation:
Admittedly a term which is no longer so popular but:

A smallholding is a farm of small size.

In third world countries, smallholdings are usually farms supporting a single family with a mixture of cash crops and subsistence farming

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smallholding

Ninety-five per cent of Senegal's farms are smallholdings...

Asker: Thanks a lot. Definitely correct, and probably more suitable for a glossary entry. However, the selected option felt more suitable for the target audience.

market garden

Explanation:
or 'community market garden', 'large-scale market garden'.
Perhaps 'market garden plot' where 'périmètre' is used?
I do think 'market garden' is fine, certainly in UK usage.
I've added a couple of references below from places local to me. These are smallish scale, but bigger than individual allotments/gardens.
This third place uses 'local growing scheme' and 'cooperative'. http://golocalfoodltd.wordpress.com/
Not suggesting you use this term, but in Tanzania the local Swahili term 'shamba' is used for a variety of small-scale farms. Perhaps there's an equivalent local term if you're not happy with 'market garden'?
