MEANING: places where there are a lot of comings and goings Explanation: it is difficult to give you a cut and dried translation without having the whole sentence but I suspect it must be something about how they set up medical facilities or care facilities in stations and sports centres because these are places through which peopole regularly transit. In the absence of more context, HTH -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2004-06-11 12:31:13 (GMT) -------------------------------------------------- IN THESE PLACES THROUGH WHICH SO MANY PEOPLE TRANSIT now I have seen your sentence |

I know it's literal but Explanation: WHATEVER IS WRONG with "places of transit"? Over 50 Googles with ("places of transit + refugees) and ("places of transit + "displaced persons"). <<The court considered that the use by police officers of skin colour as a criterion for determining who should be asked for their papers was ''merely indicative of a greater probability that the person involved was not Spanish''. It added that the moment and place at which an identity check was made, such as railway stations, and other ***places of transit***, lodgings used by foreigners or areas inhabited by a number of foreigners, had a bearing on whether it was logical for public officials to carry out identity checks>> <<As regards the geographical space in which the migration takes place, it is useful to distinguish between the place of origin, or place of departure and the place of destination, or place of arrival. Migration often does not occur directly between these two places, but involves one, or several ***places of transit***.>> [http://www.iom.int/DOCUMENTS/PUBLICATION/EN/chap01p1_24.pdf] |

transit camps Explanation: if there reference is to work with refugees, then the word is probably "transit camps". The refugees are temporarily housed (sometimes for long periods of time) in such places (such as the aforementioned sports centre and train station) before a more permanent place is found for them in a refugee camp. Often refugees come to cities or central areas after fleeing rural areas - farms, villages, etc. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs 6 mins (2004-06-11 13:25:49 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- http://www.db.idpproject.org/Sites/IdpProjectDb/idpSurvey.ns...\'Ivoire/$file/Cote+d\'Ivoire+-November+2003.doc. Selon des sources, le centre culturel, l\'un des lieux de transit de la ville, s\'est avéré inadapté aux besoins du nombre croissant de déplacés. According to some humanitarian sources, the cultural centre, one of the transit centres is inadequate for the increasing number of IDPs [Internally Displaced People] I also mentioned \"transit centres/centers\" in my note below, however, in my experience, this term is used interchangeably with \"transit camps\", which are actually of a more temporary nature. Transit camps and transit centres: http://www.db.idpproject.org/Sites/idpSurvey.nsf/wViewCountr... Most of the 35 sites where UNITA soldiers gathered have now been closed down by the Angolan government, and many of the former soldiers and their families have been moved to transit camps. These camps were only designed over a very short period of time, and have very inadequate water or sanitation facilities. However, due to transport problems many people have been stuck in these camps for a long time. The World Food Programme estimates that 185,500 demobilised soldiers and their families remain at 20 (now closed) gathering areas and a further 27,450 are in 45 transit centres, all awaiting transportation to their areas of origin. In response the WFP has initiated short-term emergency feeding in the transit centres. According to the United Nations, 330,000 demobilised soldiers and their families have already returned home. lots of human rights/refugee experience |
