French to English translations [PRO]
Law/Patents - Law (general) / Employees' Representative Institution
French term or phrase: CSE d’établissement
Context:
"la cour d’appel de Paris a, quant à elle, clairement ordonné à la société de consulter le CSE central et les CSE d’établissement sur l’évaluation des risques professionnels liés au Covid-19 et la mise en œuvre des mesures de prévention."

English translation:CSE d’établissement [Internal Committee for Employee Representation]
Explanation:
This body deals with employer-employee matters. Although "Social & Economic Committee" is the so-called official translation (a) this completely fails to convey any connection with employment and (b) potentially causes confusion with a body with the same name at UN level

"Internal" - within the company or organisation concerned

The purpose of the CSE is to consolidate in a single body the attributions of three different employee representatives bodies in French companies which are (i) the staff representatives (délégués du personnel), who are elected in companies employing at least 11 employees on an habitual basis, (ii) the works council (comité d’entreprise), and (iii) the health and safety committee (comité d’hygiène, de sécurité et des conditions de travail), both elected in companies employing at least 50 employees on an habitual basis.

establishment-level economic and social committee // establishment-level CSE // establishment CSE

Explanation:
An "establishment" can encompass a wide range of entities.

I like how this article handles the translation: https://www.globalworkplaceinsider.com/2018/01/french-employ...

"Due to the significant amount of amendments to French employment regulation provided by the Reform, we have chosen to focus this article on the main key features of the new employee representative body: the social and economic committee (Comité social et économique – “CSE”)."

I would consider doing the same as this article, i.e. writing it out in English first, giving the French version in parentheses, and referring to it as the "CSE" after that, as it would make it easier to refer to it as the "establishment CSE" or "establishment-level CSE."

This article also handles the terms very well: https://www.dlapiper.com/en/france/insights/publications/201...

I meant to write my suggestion as "establishment-level social and economic committee," to stay consistent with the French order of the words and the usage of the term on publications relating to French law.

agree  philgoddard: Or you could paraphrase it as something like "site employee representation committee".

(Local) Social and Economic Committee

Explanation:
Please see my other answer for the Central Social and Economic Committee.
Basically, this is just the new personnel representatives' committee in companies etc. (see reference on Proz where this was resolved last time)
it's important to keep the French word order to avoid confusion with the UN's CSE

agree  Michael Grabczan-Grabowski: A good option, I think. I would prefer "establishment-level social and economic committee" or use AllegroTrans' suggestion.

agree  Yvonne Gallagher: yes, word-for-word answers don't work very often. As with paired question add "French"

-> I think this is a classic case of the need for an explanatory translation, thanks for your agree

agree  Michael Grabczan-Grabowski: Change can be useful. Sticking to a convention isn't ideal if it doesn't clearly communicate the purpose of an entity. Clients' preferences also play a part. I would personally prefer using "establishment-level" instead of "internal," dep. on the context.
