Law/Patents - Law: Patents, Trademarks, Copyright / wine/champagne
French term or phrase: Poinçon
(I've filed this under "law/patents" because I believe it has more of a legal bearing than a champagne bearing.)

What is a "Poinçon" when used for branding a wine bottle, or part thereof? The usual translations are hallmark, punch, die etc. but about the only thing I can think of is something to produce an embossed effect on the wrapper of a bottle, esp. the gilt part that goes around the neck ("collet", collar) and which often bears an embossed trademark.

stamp
Explanation:
As Bourth says, 'stamp' might well work.

Could be the kind of imprint moulded into the glass, or even the kind of metal or wax 'seal' sometimes attached to prestige bottles; not loose, round the neck, but actually affixed to the shoulder of the bottle (cf. Courvoisier, Cointreau, etc.)

Don't forget the concept of 'hallmark', which is probably the kind of allusion here.
