French term or phrase: signes de références
Hi,
In an official letter of a patent application, I have:

"Pour faciliter la compréhension des revendications, il convient de faire suivre les caractéristiques de srevendications par des signes de référence, mis entre parenthèses"

reference signs /marks?

I would like the exact term used in this specific context please :)
Thank you

reference numerals
Explanation:
IMO, this refers to the reference numbers that appear in parentheses in the Claims section of many patents.

Here's an excerpt from a Canadian "how to" website...

First in French:
11.05.01
Renvoi à la description ou aux dessins dans les revendications
[...]

Then in English:
11.05.01
Claims referring to description or drawings
[...]
a. Claims which include reference numerals
Reference numerals used in the drawings are permissible in a claim provided they are in brackets or parenthesis (subsection 86(2) of the Patent Rules), and the claim is otherwise explicit and complete.

Indeed, reference signs for purists, as per Alison's comment and EPO reference: http://www.epo.org/law-practice/legal-texts/html/guidelines/...

Explanation:
Difficult to pitch the language precisely as we do not have the benefit of the original application and/or drawings, nor or an indication of what type of device is concerned.

reference characters

Explanation:
In the Swiss patent site below, reference characters are used for technical drawings. I agree with cc in nyc that it is reference numbers, if it is referring to continuous text.

agree  Alison MacG: Although "reference signs" is strictly speaking the term used by the EPO here http://www.epo.org/law-practice/legal-texts/html/guidelines/... I agree that "reference numerals" is what tends to be used in practice.
