neutral  philgoddard: I'm not saying you're wrong, but doesn't détériorateur imply they actually have a negative effect?

degrader ram

Explanation:
an improver ram vs a degrader ram = improving or degrading the genetic quality of the flock

"Plus les bords de la forme se rapprochent de la graduation 10, plus l'animal est améliorateur (sur un plus ou moins grand nombre de facteurs).
Si les bords se concentrent vers le centre du diagramme, l'animal est détériorateur pour les facteurs concernés.."

Reference: Genetic gain or loss

Reference information:
"A ram is 'half the flock.' His genetics will be spread over many more offspring than a ewe. Rams will be the primary means by which genetic improvement will be made in a flock. ... Rams are evaluated for breeding potential in a breeding soundness examination (BSE)."

Rams are assessed for the genetic improvement or deterioration (genetic gain/loss) they are likely to bring to the flock.

In my experience, a "proven" ram just means he's successfully sired lambs in the past.
