The reference was not to holes but parois, i.e., walls in which those holes are embedded. The holes form a U-shape defining or enclosing the space communicated with the exterior, etc.

The word parois occurred however a considerable distance from "elles" which is what caused my confusion. Patentese, or patent verbiage, will often place a referent at a considerable distance, but in French you have the gender indication to assist you finding it.

sorry I wrote incorrectly above, I should say refers not to the holes, but to the band or walls that define or enclose the space.

Actually, I think I figured it out just after posting, which sometimes happens, because you are forced to focus on it more. If that wasn't clear before, the word elles refers to the holes that enclose or delimit (define) a space, the space being the space formed by the U-shaped "band" in which the holes are located. The idea of "communicating" a space "out into the open," however, was new to me. It's a bit similiar to the Germanic word m�nden, udmunde, etc., i.e., leading out into the open.

Any comments or thoughts on the notion of communicating a space appreciated.

Let me rephrase:

....pr�sentent des revetements de surface favorisant leur ost�o-int�gration et/ou comprennent des trous qui mettent l'espace qu'elles d�limitent entre elles en communication avec l'ext�rieur de l'implant.

I have problems transfering the notion of "communicating a space with the exterior of an implant" into English. I cannot visualize a space being defined "entre elles" by holes and then this space being communicated, etc. A space between holes does not seem like an open space you could "communicate," well, I don't know.
Any assistance with the above appreciated.
