failing that [finding s.o. like that]... a fairly reasonable assumption would be "substitute" i.e. "preparing the new parts" that are going to be substituted / put in place instead of old parts.

Although not at all in this specific fields, I have seen 'substantif' used as an adjective in this way, with (at least empirically!) the meaning 'substantial', in its basic sense of 'having substance', rather than in the commoner extended sense of 'considerable'; so probably closer to 'significatif' in FR than 'important' (though in this usage, both could be considered as similar).

I have a massive TM (contributed to weekly by several translators for this client over at least the last 6 years) and neither substitut nor substantif appears in it even once :-/ if i were meant to be substitut, it would have shown up somewhere in the TM, I'd think.

This is the text as it is, type in French. There's often a lot of garbled nonsensical stuff in these reports that I have figured out over the years, but this is new. If it just isn't used this way, then I'll assume it's another bizarre quirk from this client. But I was wondering if I was missing something.
