Le chant est très rapidement répandu et connu, acquérant dès juillet 1792 le nom de Chant (ou encore Marche, Hymne ou Chanson) des ***Marseillois*** (***Marseillois*** se prononçait « Marseillouais » de même qu’on prononçait le « rouai » pour le roi), pour avoir été apporté à Paris par les volontaires marseillais venus à pied, en le chantant, pour défendre « la Patrie en danger ». Rapidement aussi, on l’orne de qualificatifs valorisants : à son propos on parle de « l’air chéri des patriotes », de « hymne à (ou « de ») la Liberté », de « l’hymne sainte des ***Marseillois*** », canonisation bien hâtive (« hymne » restant ici au féminin pour un chant profane, comme s’il s’agissait par là d’exprimer une sacralisation, une vénération de type religieux pour ce chant martial, bientôt « chant national »).
