Livre où l’on inscrit chronologiquement les opérations diverses (O.D.)

ou les écritures pour lesquelles il n’existe pas de journaux auxiliaires. Les écritures (articles) passées dans le journal général mentionnent la date de l’opération, le numéro ou l’intitulé des comptes à débiter ou à créditer, les sommes concernant chaque compte ainsi qu’un libellé explicatif ou la référence au document justificatif (facture, note de débit, lettre de change, etc.).

Il Codice civile all'art. 2214 prevede che tutti gli imprenditori che esercitano
un'attività commerciale devono tenere obbligatoriamente il libro giornale e il libro
degli inventari.
Il libro giornale può essere tenuto anche in forma riassuntiva; in tal caso, tuttavia,
affinché siano rispettate le norme dettate dal Codice civile, è necessario disporre di
libri giornali sussidiari, regolarmente numerati e bollati, nei quali devono essere
trascritte tutte le operazioni secondo l'ordine cronologico.
Questa tecnica fa sì che possano essere adottati i «giornali sezionali», cioè tanti libri
giornali quante sono le sezioni dell'impresa (banche, clienti, fornitori, ecc.) o quante
sono le filiali dell'azienda.
I dati riportati in questi libri vengono riepilogati nel **libro giornale generale**.
