Outre une appréciation de 8% de sa devise, le Japon surperforma sensiblement les principaux marchés d'actions au cours du troisième trimestre (performance exprimée en yens). Un nombre croissant d'investisseurs retrouvèrent leur appétit pour les actions japonaises suite à l'annonce d'une croissance annualisée de 2.3% du PIB au second trimestre, un chiffre supérieur aux attentes, et à une remontée en flèche des taux longs. L'économie japonaise était, à n'en pas douter, remise en selle. Toutefois, l'appréciation soudaine du yen par rapport au dollar US poussa les investisseurs à adopter une position plus attentiste vers la fin du trimestre.
