Pour son couronnement comme roi d’Aragon, célébré le 13 avril 1399 à Saragosse, Martin 1er fit en effet apporter cette épée de l’église Saint Pierre de Palerme, en Sicile, où elle était conservée. La légende disait qu’elle avait appartenu à l’empereur romain Constantin.

C’est vraisemblablement à l’occasion de ce couronnement que l’épée a été ornée, en haut de la lame sur la chape du fourreau, d’un décor en argent doré.

"Fornimento in ferro con cappuccio a becco saldato al codolo dopo aver infilata sul codolo la crocera che veniva fissata con due coppiglie. Le guance in legno sono fissate con spinotti ribattuti e muniti di rosette (o reparelle). La lama, ad un filo e controfilo, presenta sui due lati un largo sguscio che giunge fino all'inizio del controfilo. Fodero in cuoio nero con ***cappa*** con gancio a vite per la tasca e bocchetta in acciaio, puntale a cresta simile a quello delle baionette Vetterli ma di dimensioni minori, assicurato da due coppiglie.
