Cette technique de pêche fut sans doute l'une des premières pratiquées par l'homme, car elle consiste à piéger un poisson dans son antre, c'est-à-dire au fond de l'eau. Sa philosophie n'a pas changé au fil des siècles : elle consiste à présenter, canne posée, un appât non pas dans la couche d'eau, mais directement sur le fond, pour tenter les poissons qui s'y nourrissent en le fouillant : brème, carpe, anguille, barbeau, sandre, chevesne, poisson-chat, tanche, rotengle.

On entend par "pêche en plombée", la technique qui consiste à caler sur le fond une ligne plombée et eschée d'un poisson vivant ou mort. Elle est dite aussi " pêche sur fond ".
