L'an 1524. Les Théatins furent institués par Jean Pierre Caraffe, évêque de Thèate, ou Cièti, qui depuis fut Pape sous le nom de Paul IV. Ils furent d'abord clercs réguliers, puis ils firent les voeux ordinaires, auxquels ils ajoutèrent le voeu de non seulement de ne rien posséder, mais même de ne pas mendier et de vivre précisément des aumônes qu'on leur présentait volontiers.
